There is a significant amount of correspondence from Grant to
his mother during his time with the AEF in France during WWI.
One scrapbook documents Zora Grant's work as President of the

McWilliams. J.T. McWilliams, a surveyor and civil engineer, founded
the original Las Vegas townsite ("McWilliams Town")
and owned a large portion of Lee Canyon, much of which he donated
to become a public park. Collection is comprised of McWilliams
financial ledgers from 1905 listing property sales by block and
lot in the original Las Vegas townsite, expenses and a copy of
the deed to his Goodsprings property. Other items include receipts,
correspondence photographs, maps (including those of the original
Las Vegas townsite), ads for McWilliams maps, and surveying manuals.

also contains two detailed eulogies of Mortensen, a native of

Romans, Lorenzo

Collection consists of the photographs and papers of Lorenzo Romans
a realtor who spent most of his life in Los Angeles and moved
to Las Vegas late in life. A newspaper clipping in the collection
describes how Romans originally came to Las Vegas in 1894 and
stayed at the Las Vegas Rancho as a guest of Helen Stewart during
a land speculating trip. The article provides Romans' vivid recollections
of the Las Vegas landscape in the 1890s and his swim in the Las
Vegas springs. Collection consists primarily of photographs both
loose and in photo albums along with some correspondence and post
cards. The majority of the photographs are either
family photos or depict the Los Angeles area; there is little
else relating to Las Vegas.

of the city of Las Vegas. The papers cover a wide range of the

lists, invoices and other administrative materials from 1905-1923.
There are also records of Arden Station (located 10 miles south
of the Las Vegas Station) and miscellaneous materials relating

This collection contains the family papers of Las Vegas pioneers
Charles "Pop" Squires (editor of the Las Vegas Age and
member of the Colorado River Commission) and his wife, Delphine,
who helped found Christ Church Episcopal and the Mesquite Club.
The Squires Papers concentrate on the Las Vegas years (1905- 1964),
although there is some material from earlier periods. The Civic
interests series contains miscellaneous items relating to early
life in Las Vegas (1905-1958). The Manuscripts series contains
book and short story manuscripts, articles, press releases and
radio scripts written by Squires and his wife. The Correspondence
series reflects the period 1910-1958 (many letters relating to
his work on the CRC including some from President Herbert Hoover)
with a few items dated earlier. The Family series contains items
related to family life such as report cards, certificates, Parent
Teacher Association, club activities, news clippings, and church

owner of the Las Vegas Ranch and an active participant in the
social, political, and business life of early Las Vegas. A founding
member of the Mesquite Club (oldest women's service organization
in Las Vegas), she became an authority on state history and developed

Collection is comprised primarily of the correspondence of John
Bunker and Mary Etta
Syphus from 1891-1895. Mary Etta was one of ten children of Luke
and Christina Syphus, a pioneer Mormon family who settled in Panaca,
Nevada in the late 1800s. In September 1895, Mary Etta married
John Bunker, but passed away just two months later in November
1895. The earliest correspondence was written when Bunker was
living in El Dorado Canyon Nevada and Syphus in Panaca Nevada,
and the later correspondence when Bunker was in Logan Utah and
Syphus attending the BYU Academy Church Normal School in Provo
UT. There is additional correspondence between Mary Etta Syphus
and various friends along with some certificates and wedding announcements.
The collection also includes a genealogy chart and the Syphus
family history. Collection contains both originals, and typed
transcriptions of the correspondence. Subjects discussed include
the Muddy River, sicknesses, weather, neighbors, LDS church, school
and leisure activities.

Collection consists of a typescript account of Maria Wheeler's
experiences from her childhood in England, crossing the Atlantic
to the United States, and her trek to the western US, specifically
the Las Vegas region. Significant because of its vivid description
of her time at the Mormon Fort around 1855 including the crops
planted, relations with the local Paiute Indians, construction
of the buildings etc. Her husband was one of the original Mormon
settlers called to develop the mission at Las Vegas.

Collection is comprised of an oversize scrapbook documenting the
history and mission of the White Cross Drugstore . The White Cross
Drug Store was founded in 1918 by Las Vegas pioneer W.E. Ferron;
its slogan was "the place to go for the brands you know."
The album contains photographs, employee training materials, news
clippings, advertisements, displays and some historical narrative
and press release material on the history and mission of the store.
There is contemporary advertising ephemera/brochures on cosmetic
products and perfumes from the early 1960s.

a public relations agency in Las Vegas in the early 1940s but
wartime service ended these plans). He later opened a photography
store called Basic Photo in nearby Henderson.
