This is a map from a European atlas delineating the boundary between Mexico and the United States, illustrates the lack of detailed knowledge of the southwest before the Mexican War. This French map was published in 1826 by L. Vivien. It shows the current state of cartographic knowledge exemplified by Henry Tanner's New American Atlas of 1822 and Map of the United States of Mexico of 1825, as well as Jose Narvaes' 1823 map of New Mexico, Sonora and the California's. However, the French map above shows a number of apocryphal rivers and lakes in the west. The French map above is apart of the digital exhibit regarding UNLV Libraries' One Millionth Volume. UNLV Libraries' One Millionth Volume is entitled, The General History of the Vast Continent and Islands of America, Commonly call'd, the West-Indies, From the First Discovery thereof: with the Best Accounts the People could give of their Antiquities by Antonio de Herrera. It chonicles the history of Spanish exploration and settlement of the New World. Herrera's book was published in Madrid between 1601 and 1615. |
