<bioghist encodinganalog="545"><head>Organizational History</head><p>The Tonopah Mining Company was the largest producer in Tonopah, Nevada in the early 20th century. Developed and managed by Nevada’s Governor, Tasker L. Oddie, the company made more than $48 million between 1902 and 1948 from the 2.5 million tons of ore that were excavated from the region. From 1901 to 1910, the company was responsible for over sixty percent of the town’s mining production. The years 1910-1930 saw a drop in production, however, when the Tonopah Belmont and Tonopah Extension companies surpassed the Tonopah Mining Company’s production. The Mizpah, the company’s deepest shaft, reached depths of fifteen hundred feet, but was also known for the high number of fatalities suffered by its miners as a result of silicosis. During its heyday, the Tonopah Mining Company built a narrow gauge railroad on the Carson &amp; Colorado Railroad to aid in the shipping of supplies and freight to the Tonopah region. Upon completion of the railroad on July 25, 1904, there was a town-wide celebration that included dances, races, sporting events, and several speeches. </p></bioghist><scopecontent encodinganalog="520"><head>Scope and Content</head>
