<bioghist encodinganalog="545"><head>Historical Overview</head><p>Goldfield, located in Esmeralda County, Nevada, began as a mining camp in May 1903 with a population of less than a dozen. Within four years it grew to an estimated peak of 30,000 as a result of several large strikes. The district produced a tremendous amount of ore. George Wingfield was among those to gain prominence in Goldfield. The community's boom was short-lived, lasting only about a decade. A fire raged through Goldfield in 1923, destroying most of the business district. Through the subsequent decades the town has slowly shrunken to a mere shadow of its former self.</p></bioghist><scopecontent encodinganalog="520"><head>Scope and Content</head>
