<bioghist encodinganalog="545">
Organizational History

The Las Vegas Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) was founded in 1939. Its purpose is to “unite graduates of regionally accredited institutions in order to promote equity, education, intellectual growth, individual worth, and development of opportunities for women and girls.”

Members of the Las Vegas Branch have been involved in many national and community issues. Some of the major programs have dealt with Equal Rights Admendment, Get Out the Vote, Grass Roots Lobby Day at the State Legislature, public education about environmental issues, child care facilities, voting campaigns, teen pregnancy and scholarship for students.

The branch meets monthly from September through May. The meetings usually feature a guest speaker. Annually, a State convention is held; biennially, a national convention is held. There are approximately 180 to 200 members of the branch.

</bioghist><scopecontent encodinganalog="520">
Scope and Content

The collection is divided into two series. The first “Administrative”, contains directories, bylaws, charters, meeting minutes, financial records, guest registers and newsletters of the Las Vegas Branch. The information dates back to 1942, with most of the material covering the late 1960s to the mid 1990s. Three presidents’ files are contained in this series. One is a personal file while the other two contain materials from the presidents. Photocopied pictures (with captions) from scrapbooks are contained in this series. The original photographs are maintained in envelopes in the back of each folder for the corresponding scrapbook.

The second series, “Programs and Issues”, contains a play about the founding of the national organization, bulletin board cut-outs, and programs used to convey information to the public. There is also a large collection of materials relating to the Equal Rights Amendment. This information includes how the ERA would effect men and women, how to promote ERA, and what groups were against the ERA. One file is on Christopher Daniel, but no information is given to tell who this person is or the significance of this person to the organization. Newsletters included in the collection came from the vertical file in Special Collections at Lied Library.

This collection is comprised of two accessions, MS 96-09 and MS 99-08. In June, 1999, the two accessions were integrated into one collection, MS 96-09.
</scopecontent>
