Fines and Lost Books

Fines

Fines are assessed on overdue books at the rate of $.20 per day, per book to a maximum of $15.00. There is NO grace period. The system will charge overdue fines beginning the first day the book is overdue, but will not generate a bill for a fine which is less than $1.00. Overdue fines continue to accrue on holidays and other days when the library is closed. Books that are returned to a book drop when the library is closed will be checked in, backdated to the last day when the library was open.

Fines on recalled books which are not returned by the new due date on the recall notice will be charged at the rate of $2.00 per day, per book, with no maximum. All patrons who fail to respond to a recall notice, including faculty, must pay recall fines. Library privileges will be suspended until the recalled item is returned and the fine paid.

In addition, students will be placed on "STOP" with the Registrar's office, which means that they won’t be able to receive diplomas or transcripts, and will not be able to register for the next semester until these charges are cleared from their records.

Lost books

When a book is 28 days overdue, it will be declared lost, and you will be charged the replacement cost of the book plus a NONREFUNDABLE $35.00 PROCESSING FEE. If the book is returned before it is reordered, only the replacement cost will be refunded. If you return the book before paying for it, the replacement cost will be cancelled and a late fine assessed.

Public Borrowers:

If you have neither returned nor paid for the item three weeks after the bill is generated, the replacement cost and processing fee will be charged to your credit card. Late fines in excess of $10.00 which have remained unpaid three weeks after the overdue items were returned will also be charged to your credit card. Should your credit line be insufficient to cover these charges, your account will be sent to a collection agency, and you will be additionally liable for all collection and litigation costs.

Corporate Borrowers:

Failure to respond to overdue notices or bills for replacement will result in the account being turned over to a collection agency. At this point, the person to whom the card is registered will be responsible for paying collection costs in addition to accrued fines or fees.

NOTE! Notices are mailed out only as a courtesy. If you do not receive notices, you are still responsible for returning overdue library books and/or payment of any fees or fines incurred. It is your responsibility to notify the library of any address or email changes, so that you may receive notification of overdue materials or fines owed.

Remember! Your library card is like a credit card and you are responsible for all items checked out on it. If your card is lost or stolen, immediately notify the UNLV Library Circulation Desk at 895-2111.
