Borrowing Guidelines

It is your responsibility to read and comply with these guidelines. Registration for library privileges indicates your agreement for compliance.

Although loan periods vary, all patrons, including faculty, are only guaranteed a loan period of two weeks. Materials are subject to recall if they are needed by another university-affiliated patron, which will generate a new, two week due date. Books that are needed for Reserve are subject to immediate recall. You will be notified if the due date of an item has changed.

You are responsible for all library materials checked out on your card until they are returned to the library and cleared from your account.

UNLV's official ID card, the RebelCard, is required for all UNLV students, faculty, and staff. Those users not possessing a RebelCard, regardless of affiliation, must show government-issued photo identification when registering for access or checking items out. There is no exception to this policy.

Additionally, registration of your card requires compliance with the University Libraries Expectations for User and Visitor Conduct and the University Libraries Computer Use Policy.

Holds and Recalls

If an item is checked out and you would like to reserve it, you may place a hold on it at the Circulation Desk in Lied Library or at any branch library service desk. Holds on checked-out items may also be placed online through the library catalog. UNLV-affiliated patrons may place a recall on a book, which will generate a due date of two weeks for the item that is checked out.

Returns

All books borrowed from the Library MUST be returned to the University Libraries, Weiner-Rogers Law Library, Nevada State College Library, or to any of the College of Southern Nevada Libraries. Books returned to Clark County libraries will remain charged to your card until they reach UNLV Libraries; you are responsible for fees assessed on overdue items.

Renewals

Books may be renewed as many time as allowed by your patron type. If your card is in good standing and your books are not yet overdue, you may renew books online by following these instructions. You may not renew a book if another patron has placed a hold on it.

Eligible books may be renewed in person at the Lied Library Circulation Desk or any branch library service desk. They may also be renewed by phone by calling the Lied Library Circulation Desk at 702-895-2111. Items may not be renewed if another patron has a hold on an item, if fines are owed to the library, or if any item is overdue.

Due Dates

KNOWING THE DUE DATE IS YOUR RESPONSIBILITY! Due dates will either be stamped inside the item or printed on a receipt. A new due date will be given for recalled books. If you are unsure when an item is due, you may view your record online or contact the Lied Library Circulation Desk at 702-895-2111.

Notices

Notices are emailed out only as a courtesy. If you do not receive notices you are still responsible for returning overdue library books and/or payment of any fines or fees incurred. It is your responsibility to notify the library of any address changes, so that you may receive notification of overdue materials or fines owed.

Fines and Lost Books

Fines are assessed on overdue books at $.20 per day, per book to a maximum of $15.00. The system will charge overdue fines beginning the first day the book is overdue, but will not generate a bill for a fine that is less than $1.00. When a book is overdue more than 28 days, it will be declared lost and you will be charged the replacement cost of the book plus a NONREFUNDABLE $35.00 PROCESSING FEE. If the book is returned before reorder, only the replacement cost will be refunded.

Fines on LINK+ and Leisure Reading books which are not returned by the due date will be assessed at the rate of $1.00 per day, per book, with no maximum. LINK+ and Leisure Reading items overdue more than 14 days will be declared lost and you will be charged a $115.00 replacement charge.

Fines on recalled books which are not returned by the new due date on the recall notice will be assessed at the rate of $2.00 per day, per book, with no maximum. All patrons who fail to respond to a recall notice, including faculty and graduate assistants, must pay recall fines. In addition, library privileges will be suspended until the recalled item is returned and the fine is paid.

Patrons with outstanding charges or overdue books will lose their library privileges. Students who have charges in excess of $5.00 will be placed on “STOP” with the Registrar’s Office. Grades, diplomas or transcripts will not be released and you will not be able to register for the next semester until the charges are cleared from your record. Charges in excess of $10 will be billed to the credit card on file with the library for those patrons who are not affiliated with UNLV. If the library is unable to collect payment for fines or materials, your account will be sent to a collection agency!

Recovery of Materials

Patrons failing to respond to a final demand for payment of library materials will be sent to our collection agency. Collection agency fees are assessed at 50% of the amount owed to the library, in addition to the amount owed. Once your account has been sent to the collection agency, the library is no longer able to negotiate charges.

If you have questions, please contact the Lied Library Circulation Desk at 702-895-2111 or Library.Access@unlv.edu.
