UNLV’s Lied Library and Branch Libraries

The UNLV Libraries consist of the main Lied Library, complimented by the Architecture Studies, Curriculum Materials and Music Libraries, and the Shadow Lane Campus online library.

Accessing Library Collections

Course Reserves: Print and electronic resources placed on reserve by UNLV faculty and Teaching Assistants can be accessed via UNLV Libraries Course Reserves, available through the Libraries home page.

Checking Out Books: Your library-validated RebelCard allows you to use the Libraries’ Self-Service Checkout workstations. The Self-Checkout unit reads your barcode, desensitizes the book-security feature and prints a receipt. There are no limits on the number of books you can check out. For assistance, please consult the Library’s Circulation Desk.

RebelCard: You will need a library-validated Rebel I.D. Card to access library catalogs and electronic resources. RebelCards can be acquired at the RebelCard Service Center in Moyer Student Union. You must have your RebelCard validated at the Circulation Counter in one of the UNLV Libraries locations prior to your first log-in.

Loan Periods: Graduate Students, including GA (Graduate Assistants), TA (Teaching Assistants), and RA (Research Assistants), have semester-long checkout for books with two renewals. Periodicals do not circulate. There are three loan periods per year: fall semester, spring semester, and summer term. All checked-out materials are subject to recall by other students, faculty, and staff. Graduate students are responsible for Recall, Document Delivery, and Reserve fines. Recall and Document Delivery fines are $2.00 per day, per book. Reserve fines vary. There are no other fines. Books can be renewed online.

Returning Materials to the Library: Books can be returned via book drops located across campus or to any of the library locations. Due to the possibility of heat damage, media resources (videos, CD-ROMs, CDs, etc.) should never be placed in outdoor book returns.

Online Book Renewal: Books checked out from the UNLV Libraries can be renewed by accessing Your Account from the top tool bar of the Libraries home page.

View Your Circulation Record: Click on Your Account on the top menu of the Libraries home page to find a record of the books you have checked out, possible Recalls, any fines owed, and to renew books.

Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan: For materials not available in the Libraries’ collections, you may request that the Document Delivery/Interlibrary Loan Service obtain these for you. Requests may be submitted via the Libraries Document Delivery web page or in person at the Document Delivery service window on the first floor of Lied Library.

Standard Library Workstations: Standard library workstations provide common productivity software, Internet access, and access to the Libraries’ electronic databases. Selected workstations in Lied Library have multimedia capabilities. Stop by the first floor Research and Information desk for additional information.

 Searching the Collections:

Electronic Resources: The Libraries have approximately 200 electronic indexes and databases that can be used to find journal and research citations and other relevant information in all subject areas. Many of these resources provide full-text online.

Research Assistance

General Research Assistance: General information and research assistance is available in Lied Library on the first and second floor Research & Information service desks, and in the branch libraries at the Information/Circulation counters.

Library Faculty Subject Specialists: Subject librarians develop and maintain the Libraries’ collections in the various discipline areas. Your subject librarian possesses expertise in the resources of your discipline and is a great point of contact for any questions or comments about the Libraries, and for specialized research consultation.

Additional Library Services & Resources

Library Instruction: Periodically in the Fall and Spring semesters and Summer term, hands-on library workshops specifically oriented toward graduate students and are offered to assist in the acquisition of search strategies and skills required to successfully find needed information. Check the Libraries’ Instruction Department web page for dates and times. The Instruction Department also hosts a Faculty and Graduate Student Seminar Series: Lunchtime sessions on new or important library resources and services, pedagogy for research skills development, and more.

Printing/Copying: All PCs in the UNLV Libraries are networked to both black & white and color printers. Prints are made using the RebelCard or a Rebel Copy Card as a debit card. Copy machines also require the use of a RebelCard or Rebel Copy Card. See floor plans for locations of copiers in Lied Library.

Laptop Computers: You can use your personal laptop with our wireless system or it can be configured for wired Internet connectivity in Lied Library at the Media Resources Counter. Also, laptop computers are available for a 4-hour loan period at Lied Library’s Media Resources desk. Word processing and access to the Libraries’ electronic resources are among the features offered on these computers. The laptops are wireless and can be used anywhere in the library.

Group Study Rooms: Group study rooms are located on the 1st, 3rd, 4th, and 5th floors of Lied Library and are availableon a first come first served basis. Three or more people constitute a “group.” Most group study rooms are equipped with white boards and laptop connectivity.
