The Studio contains 3 computers, each with an attached scanner and VHS/DVD player.

DATA AND FILE MANAGEMENT

  • Users are responsible for saving their files and creating backup copies frequently as they work on their project.
  • Users must supply their own storage media to save their files. The library does not supply any storage media or storage space.
  • Users may save files may to the workstation hard drive (D:\My Documents) temporarily for the length of your Studio session (usually 4 hours or less.) Do not use the workstation hard drive for permanent storage.
  • Direct connection to your “Home Directory” or H drive is not available in the library. “My Documents” saves to the workstation hard drive — not your Home Directory. Indirect connection to your H drive is possible by using NetStorage or FTP. Ask for the instructions handout at the Library Computer Help Desk.
  • We recommend that when you log into the Studio workstation, you transfer a copy of the files you will be working on to a folder with your name on it under “My Documents.” Save frequently to “My Documents” during your work session. Before logging off the workstation, transfer a copy of your file to your removable storage media AND your H drive before you leave.
  • We recommend that you save multiple versions of your project as you progress. For example, you might start your project with the name “Project A 9-1-07 3PM” and as you work on it, save it with the new name “Project A 9-1-07 5PM.” If you encounter a problem, you can go back to the earlier version, rather than starting over from scratch.
  • Any files stored in “My Documents” are subject to being read, edited, or deleted at any time by any user of the Studio or library staff member.
  • Any files placed on the Desktop or C: drive of the workstation will be automatically deleted when the computer shuts off, whether it is due to logging off the computer or due to the computer “crashing.”
  • Storage options include:
    • CD-R or CD-RW
    • DVD-R or DVD-RW
    • Zip 250 (requires checkout of external Zip drive from Media Resources Desk)
    • Your own FireWire or USB storage device (flash drive, thumb drive, external hard drive)
    • online file storage service
