WHAT?
Academic Search Premier is a tool called a periodical index that you can use to find journal articles on almost any topic. One of the great thing about this index is that, for many of the articles, the full text is available for you to easily read, print, save, or email to yourself.
WHERE?
From the Libraries' home page (http://www.library.unlv.edu/) choose Journal Articles under the red bar labeled Find, then on the Find Articles and More page choose Lost? Try a General Search In Academic Search Premier (top right, in red).
HOW?
Type your topic in the box labeled Find.
If desired, limit your results to articles that are available full text on the computer by checking the box labeled Full Text. You can limit your search to scholarly journals (rather than popular magazines) by checking the box labeled Scholarly ( Peer Reviewed) Journals.
If you do not get any articles or only get a few, and would like to find more, try using different words to describe your subject. Also, you can try checking the boxes under Expand Your Search to: to make the index search for related words and/or search for your words in more places within the article or record.
SEARCH TIPS
The index will search for adjacent words as a phrase, that is,
it will only retrieve them if they appear side by side in the record.
Find: Nevada water
If you want to search for more than one word but you do not want the index to search them as a phrase, put the word "and" between the words.
Find: Nevada and water
The word "or" between words will retrieve records with either of the words, so you generally get a larger retrieval. This works well for synonyms.
Find: Nevada and (water or drought)
RESULTS Full Text Articles
Some of the articles in the results list can be viewed full text, online. For articles available online through this index (Academic Search Premier) look for entries with an
HTML Full Text,
PDF Full Text, and/or
Linked Full Text icon and click on the icon to link to the text of the article.
There is also another possibility for finding the full text of an article. If it is not available through this index, that is, you do not see any of the icons listed above, it might be available through some other index to which the Libraries subscribe. Find out by clicking on the Get Text
icon. This page gives you a variety of responses depending on the journal that contains your article. Sometimes, you will be connected directly to the article. Sometimes you will be given a choice of tools to use to find the article. If you have any questions about using this screen you can ask for assistance at one of the Libraries' Help Desks.
This screen will also inform you if the Libraries do not have electronic access to the text of the article through any of our indexes. In that case, one of your choices is to connect to the Libraries' catalog to see if we own a print copy. If we do, get the call number for the journal that contains the article then go up to the second floor of Lied Library to find the journal in paper. Be sure and jot down the citation information (volume, date and page number) so you can find the article in the journal. You can ask for help at the information desks.
Any titles that the Libraries do not own can be requested from UNLV Document Delivery service. Note this option is only available to UNLV faculty, staff and students.
PRINT/E-MAIL/SAVE
You can print/e-mail or save records by clicking on those icons
at the top of the page when viewing a citation or article.
The full text of an article, when it is available, will be included in the print, e-mail or save function unless you deselect that option. Beware, however, that this is not true of full text articles that are in linked full text format or PDF. To print linked articles, first click on the title of the article to link to it then print from there.
To print the full text of a PDF file you must first click on the
PDF icon to view the article. Important - to print, email or save
this article use the print, email and save icons supplied by the PDF software.
You will find these icons near the top of the page on the left side
of the screen under the blue link that says "Result List | Refine
Search". Don't use the browser's print function (under File).
If you have more than one article you can manage them using the folder option. From the results list, add the records you want to keep (using the folder icon on the right) to your folder (see the icon on the top of the page). You can also add items to your folder when you are viewing the citation or the article. When you are ready to print, email or save, open your folder and click on the icon from there. Read the options available once you have selected print, e-mail or save. Notice that unless you deselect the option, your folder will be emptied after printing, e-mailing or saving.
