Accessing Library Databases from Off-Campus
Requirements for Remote Access
- Have status as a currently enrolled/employed student, faculty, or staff member.
Due to licensing restrictions required by publishers who produce electronic resources, off-campus access to the databases is limited to authorized users. Only currently enrolled students and/or currently employed staff or faculty of UNLV can access licensed databases from off-campus. Alumni are not eligible for this privilege.
- Possess an activated UNLV Library Barcode.
New students will be mailed a temporary barcode to allow immediate off-campus access to the Libraries’ electronic resources. When your RebelCard ID is activated at the Lied Library Circulation Desk or at one of the branch libraries – Architecture Studies, Curriculum Materials or Music, the barcode located on the back of the card becomes your permanent library barcode, replacing the temporary version that was provided to you by e-mail.
For more information contact the Circulation
Department at 895-2111.
- Establish a Library PIN.
If you have not set up your PIN, you can do it now by following these simple, self-service procedures:
- Go to the University Libraries Homepage (or use a nearby Express Station if you are in the library)
- Click on "Your Account" at the top of the page
- Enter the barcode from the back of your RebelCard ID
- Click on "Submit"
- Create a four-character PIN (numbers and/or letters in upper or lower case are all acceptable)
Or select the full service option and ask a staff member at Lied Library Circulation Desk or at one of the branch libraries to set a PIN for you.
- Have Web access and Internet
Explorer version 6 or later, Firefox version 1 or later, or the most recent version of Safari.
You must be running Internet Explorer version
6.x or above, Firefox version 1 or above, or the most current version of Safari to connect from off-campus. Some databases only work with certain browsers.
- Have cookies and javascript enabled in your browser and any pop-up blocker software disabled.
Many of the databases and e-journals require that you have cookies
and javascript turned on in your browser. Some use pop-up windows
to display information. These settings are located under Edit->preferences
in Netscape and under Tools->Internet Options in Internet
Explorer.
Accessing databases
Once you meet all of the requirements simply click on the database you wish to
use. You should see a screen asking for your library barcode and PIN.
