African Americans
- Booker
T. Washington (1856-1915) was an African American educator
prominent after the Civil War and instrumental in expanding the education
and economic opportunities. His book Up From Slavery (1901)
is well known. He founded the National Negro Business League and
was an advisor to Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard
Taft. He was also able to persuade many industrialists to provide
opportunities to blacks in the period after the Civil War to the First World
War (1865-1914). Washington acted as a key
figure during this critical period for national black movement.
