Nevada Historical Society Papers
The published papers of the Nevada Historical Society were collectively published in volumes. Volume 1 (1913 to 1916), Volume 2 (1917-1922) and Volume 3 (1921-22) provide an interesting insight into both the history of Nevada and the contemporary society and times when they were written. The writings reflect a turn of the century evolution into present day Nevada. The books provide an intimate look at various levels of society and the diverse cultures that exist within Nevada--mining, farming, ranching, Native American, and more.
The Progress of the Century
The Progress of the Century is a unique volume. Each chapter is a summary of the progress made in the 19th century written by outstanding scholars of the day. The chapter topics provide an insight into the contemporary perceptions that would characterize developments in the early 20th century. Among the authors are Alfred Russel Wallace writing on evolution, William Flinders-Petrie on archeology, William Osler writing on medicine, and others. The volume was published in 1901 and provides a unique historical insight.
Civic Leaders of Nevada
An excerpt (34 p.) from the August 1906 issue of Successful American which contains biographies of leading figures in Nevada. Many made their fortunes in the mining operations.
The Evolving Role of African Americans
Booker T. Washington (1856-1915) was an African American educator prominent after the Civil War and instrumental in expanding the education and economic opportunities. His book Up From Slavery (1901) is well known. He founded the National Negro Business League and was an advisor to Presidents Theodore Roosevelt and William Howard Taft. He was also able to persuade many industrialists to provide opportunities to blacks in the period after the Civil War to the First World War (1865-1914). Washington acted as a key figure during this critical period for national black movement.

We have digitized his 1907 book, The Negro in Business (379 p., plus 37 p. of plates) from the UNLV collection. Click on a chapter number or section title in the Table Of Contents pages (p. [5-6]) to access that chapter or section. Individual illustrations may be accessed by clicking on their titles in the List Of Illustrations (p. [7-8]).

Science at the Turn of the Century
This was a period of many scientific discoveries. We have digitized selective texts that were common for this period that would be found in schools of the day. This is not meant to be comprehensive but suggestive of what was known and how theories emerging were represented at that time.
