Between the Lines, News from YOUR Research Library: Learn

Welcome to the second spring issue of Between the Lines, an e-newsletter created specifically with UNLV faculty, staff, and graduate students in mind.  As the semester comes to an end, we invite you to learn about some of the projects that have been our focus throughout the spring.

In this issue, themed LEARN, we showcase a new space dedicated for in-depth research consultations where our subject liaison librarians can meet with students and faculty.

We would like to learn about your readership of this e-newsletter through a brief survey. Your feedback will inform upcoming issues, which are published twice a semester.

Learn about specific datasets and statistical resources for your subject area and a selection of interdisciplinary education data resources in a new library guide.

New Research Consultation Room Now Open for In-Depth Research Assistance

Research consultations with a librarian are a core library service available to UNLV students, faculty, and staff. To establish a formal and visible space for subject liaison librarians to meet and address in-depth research questions, the UNLV University Libraries recently unveiled the Research Consultation Room in Lied Library on the first floor near the north entrance.

The new Research Consultation Room is part of the ongoing Lied Library Space Enhancement Project. To address the needs of users and groups requiring in-depth research assistance, the library committed to providing a new space for the existing service. In 2013, the Libraries saw an increase in research consultations by 20%.

Learn About Education Datasets and Statistical Resources Included in a New Library Guide

At UNLV University Libraries’ recent faculty workshop “Data Across the Disciplines,” librarians and faculty from several colleges discussed the kinds of data that they need access to for their research, and a team of librarians presented an overview of different types of online data and statistical sources currently available to researchers.

The library data team will use the details they gathered to further develop access to collections of datasets; they have already compiled a web guide that organizes an array of shared data resources  by discipline and subject. The Libraries’ Data and Statistics Guides offer access to more than 125 different sources of data and statistical information. The resources include statistical databases, datasets, and free open source data. As you explore the Libraries’ online guide, be sure to check out our links to a number of different web tools to assist with data visualization.

UNLV University Libraries Presents Digital Archive of Student Newspaper, The Rebel Yell

The UNLV University Libraries Digital Collections provide online access to unique images, documents, and more. This spring, Digital Collections is rolling out the digital archive of UNLV’s student newspaper, The Rebel Yell.

This project captures over 30,000 pages of The Rebel Yell from its inaugural issue in 1956 through 2010, at which point it went online and is available on its own website with its own digital archive.

Calvert Undergraduate Research Award Winners… Where Are They Now?

By BTL on February 22, 2014 9:25 PM | Permalink

Established in 2006, the UNLV University Libraries Lance & Elena Calvert Undergraduate Research Award recognizes sophistication and originality in student research projects. Winners demonstrate evidence of library research skills, adept use of library resources, and reflection upon the strategies utilized to investigate a research problem. Winners receive a cash prize and public recognition of their excellent work as projects are digitally published through DigitalScholarship@UNLV, the digital repository for UNLV scholarship and research. The Libraries are currently accepting applications for the 2014 Calvert Award. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. on April 24, 2014 and award winners will be honored at a reception.

We recently caught up with three past Calvert Award winners to see what they are doing now.
