Digital Scholarship@UNLV Celebrates One Millionth Download of Locally Authored Scholarship

Ever wonder who is accessing and using your scholarly work? Librarians can introduce you to several tools to help you track its use, including a review of downloads from our own progressive distribution channel.

One Millionth Download Image

The UNLV Libraries have made a commitment to showcase faculty and student research on a global scale through Digital Scholarship@UNLV—an institutional repository that archives scholarly materials created by UNLV researchers. On March 26, 2013, only three years after its launch, Digital Scholarship@UNLV hit the one millionth download mark!

Faculty who archive pre-prints or post-prints of their articles or other academic projects receive detailed monthly reports listing how many times their work has been downloaded and what search terms were used to locate it. Rather than being inaccessible behind publisher pay walls, papers archived in Digital Scholarship@UNLV are available to robust academic search tools, such as Google Scholar. This wider exposure leads to the potential for work being more widely cited.

The day-to-day responsibilities of the library staff team responsible for the repository include: converting submitted files to widely used document and media formats, conducting copyright research to deliver appropriate levels of full text access, and, providing subject analysis using a controlled vocabulary to make articles more easily categorized and retrieved by search tools. The team also performs search engine optimization techniques and tracks metrics—the popularity of the site and who is accessing it, when, and from where—to demonstrate that Digital Scholarship@UNLV ranks higher in search engine results than our peer institutions’ institutional repositories.

Between January 2011 and March 2013, the repository generated 80% new visitors, 20% returning visitors, and 166,218 total visitors. These visitors accessed Digital Scholarship@UNLV from 192 countries, the top ten being the United States, United Kingdom, Canada, India, Australia, China, Malaysia, Singapore, the Philippines, and Germany.

Faculty authors of scholarly materials can submit their content through the Submit Research tab at http://digitalscholarship.unlv.edu/. Other content, such as student posters and new conference materials may be submitted directly to Marianne Buehler, Urban Sustainability Librarian/IR Administrator marianne.buehler@unlv.edu.
