User Survey Helps the Libraries Explore Areas to Improve

Ever wonder how the library knows what you want when you want it? The answer is simple: knowledgeable staff, careful research, and cooperative survey participants.

UNLV Libraries’ central mission is to contribute to and support self-sufficient learners who can discover, access, and use information effectively for academic success, research, and life-long learning. But, to do this, librarians need to explore how the Libraries should evolve to keep up with changing needs.

In fall 2012, the Libraries conducted its most recent survey to obtain information on user satisfaction with library services and collections, which services are seen as most important or valuable, and indicators of information-seeking behavior. Approximately 1200 undergraduates, 400 graduate students, and 200 faculty members completed the survey.

Overall satisfaction is quite high, with 97% of undergraduates and graduate students and 95% of faculty satisfied or very satisfied with the Libraries. For graduate students, the areas with the largest percentage indicating satisfaction are library staff and reference/instruction/consultation services. For undergraduates, the areas with the largest percentage indicating satisfaction are library staff, services like instruction, reference, and circulation, and print collections. For faculty, the areas with the largest percentage indicating satisfaction are library staff, library spaces, and librarian presentations to classes.

Although the vast majority of participants rated the Libraries highly, there is always room for improvement. Library staff are paying attention to areas where faculty, staff, and students are less satisfied, such as website usability. In the coming year, the Libraries will use survey data and the many constructive comments received to inform new or evolving activities and services.

UNLV Libraries has a stellar record for its dedication to continuous improvement through measuring user behavior and feedback. Assessment data demonstrates how the Libraries contribute to student learning outcomes in accordance with its institutional mission and strategic plan. In 2010, the Northwest Commission on Colleges and Universities commended University Libraries for its “highly effective and robust program of assessment data gathering that is used on an ongoing basis to improve resources and services.”
