UNLV Libraries -> Architecture Studies Library -> Finding and Using Resources -> Module 3: Web navigation - ASL pages

Tips on using ASL web pages: Although we have designed the Architecture Studies Libraries pages to be as user friendly and self-evident as possible, there are a few tips we might point out to make your use of these pages more effective.

Tip 1
:
Computers in all of the UNLV Libraries open to the default page of the UNLV Libraries home page. This is not the ASL page. To get to the ASL page, choose Architecture Studies Library from the selection of libraries at the bottom of the page. All ASL pages have a web address [also called URL or Uniform Resource Locator] starting with http://www.library.unlv.edu/arch

Tip 2:
Orient yourself to the page before jumping in – there are several navigation options.

  • Tip 2.1: For instance, the top two horizontal bars [the box, and the bar] are found on every ASL page. In the top box, you see a search box. This search box can be limited to just the ASL pages, and in fact this is the default (ASL web site) on the ASL home page.

ASL Home Page

  • Tip2.2: Below the box and bar is the third bar, which is called breadcrumbs. On all of the ASL pages, you will see the breadcrumb UNLV Libraries >> Architecture Studies Library.
  • Tip 2.3: Below the breadcrumbs on the left are major categories of the ASL pages. The best way to orient yourself is to explore each section to see what is there.
  • Tip 2.4: Out of sight, below "the fold" you will see “Quick Links.” These represent our best guess for the websites you will need with some frequency. There are quite a few of these, so we have grouped them into categories
  • Tip 2.5 Our philosophy is that we will often link to sites and resources in more than one spot, to ease your finding and using these sites and resources.
  • Tip 2.6: Information about the Architecture Studies Library is linked to below the image/slide show of Las Vegas Architecture. Find out about services, collections, staff, hours. The link to the blog is also in this location.

Tip 3
: The "Ask a question" link is a good one to draw your attention to. This takes you to a form which when submitted goes to the ASL staff. This is one way to contact us [don’t forget phone and the ever-popular visit to the library!]. You can ask about the web pages, about an assignment, or about information on a topic, and we will reply as quickly as possible.

Tip 4:
Before you print out any pages from the ASL site, check “print preview” [see toolbar, “file”] to see how many pages you want to print. Many of our pages look like there is just one screen, but you may get more than you bargained for if you print without checking print preview first.

Tip 5:
There are many items on the ASL pages that you might not expect.

So, to review:
Tip 1: how to get to the ASL pages
Tip 2: orient yourself to our navigation aids
Tip 3: ask the ASL staff – online, by phone, in person
Tip 4: don’t forget print preview. It will save you lots of money over your years here!
Tip 5: explore our pages – we have tons of “stuff” and more being put on every day.
