Website: Light Pollution Authority Home Page

Description: website for the international dark sky association, dedicated to educating and understanding the effects of light pollution
Why it stands out: only organization devoted to creating codes for urban night time lighting schemes
Why would it be useful to other students: I think the future architects and planners should take careful consideration when designing exterior lighting and this website is a good place to start

Description: Your stipulation is "NO search engines" however this one is different. Anyone - grads especially - can use this site
Why it stands out: It is a search engine tied into every book Amazon.com sells. You can search "inside" of texts and archived webpages.
Why would it be useful to other students: YES! Anyone doing written research can save hours of physical library time and still get access to written materials

Why it stands out: Goes deeper into sustainable design than most schools do currently.

Description: One of the coolest community-building sites available. It is based out of Portland, OR, and it stands out from the rest.
Why it stands out: It has a lot of information available on community design from theory to anecdote.

Description: Paolo Soleri’s homepage that covers his experimental communities at Cordes Junction and Scottsdale.
Why it stands out: It is very creative and one of the few “working laboratories” of design.
Why would it be useful to other students: Has some interesting theory (“archeology”) and interesting appearance.

Description: a designer's website; has pictures of what he sees as bad architecture in China.
Why it stands out: Pictures are put up without description, this lets the picture do the talking.
Why would it be useful to other students: Shows that not all westernized skyscrapers are good, especially in an eastern environment like China

Website: NASA World Wind : "to inspire the next generation of explorers ... as only NASA can."

Description: Free downloadable NASA software that lets you zoom from satellite altitude into any place on Earth.

Why it stands out: Learning curve is a little steep but worthwhile. Be patient. Topo format as well as satellite images and much more.
Why would it be useful to other students: You can do screen captures of a section of land (saves in .png format). This might be quite useful when developing display materials/presentation boards for class projects.
