welcomes Lecturer Roberto J. Rovira

Roberto Rovira is a licensed landscape architect in the state of California, Assistant Professor
in the Landscape Architecture Department at Florida International University in Miami, Florida,
and Senior Landscape Architect at the landscape and planning firm ArquitectonicaGEO. In
2002 he founded the interdisciplinary firm Azimuth Studio, Inc.
He is the recipient of numerous design awards including
the 2006 Kauffman Prize sponsored
the Ewing Marion Kauffman Foundation,
First Place in the 2005 Miami Monument International
Design Competition
First Prize in the 2000 100% Design Competition Interiors &
Artworks category in London, England.
Silver Medal in
the Landscape Architecture category of the 2007 Miami Beach Bienal for GEO’s “Envisioning
Hudson Square” project which exhibited in New York in 2007 and for which he was Project
Lead and Concept Designer.
Bronze Medal in the
Unbuilt Category at the 2007 Miami Beach Bienal
Landscape
Architect of the Year at the 2007 Design Awards sponsored by the AIA-Miami Chapter.
Roberto Rovira’s interests, professional experience and diverse background encompass the
fields of design and fine art and have led to a strong interest in projects that push the
traditional boundaries of the design disciplines. He obtained a Masters in Landscape
Architecture from the Rhode Island School of Design [RISD] in 1998, a Diplôme from the
Université de Paris Sorbonne’s Cours de Civilisation Française in 1995, and a Bachelor of
Science in Mechanical Engineering from Cornell University in 1990.
During his time at RISD, he received the Graduate Merit Award from the American Society of
Landscape Architects, and earned the Dean’s Scholar Award.
His projects attempt to bridge
architecture, landscape architecture and sculpture, often by embracing the concepts of
transformation and time as their unifying medium, frequently within the urban canvas.
Printmaking, installation art and mapping have become important means with which to
explore these research interests. An accomplished printmaker, Roberto’s work is part of
museum and book collections in California, and his landscape architectural and sculptural
projects include the design of public spaces and public art in the San Francisco Bay Area, in
Seattle, Washington, and in New England, where he founded the installation group Guerrilla
Gardens.
Most recently, as Senior Landscape Architect for ArquitectonicaGEO, he developed the
conceptual design for Biscayne Landing in Miami, FL, where LEED design principles and
grand topographic gestures based on an adjacent mangrove preserve are being used to
reclaim a former landfill and transform it into a thriving mixed-use community. He is currently
leading GEO’s design team for the new Miami Art Museum, designed by the renown Swiss
architectural team, Herzog and deMeuron.
