West Las Vegas Library
Architect(s): Arturo Cambeiro, Architect
Address: 951 W. Lake Mead Blvd.
Year: 1989
One of the older branch libraries, the West Las Vegas Library is an important
part of the community it serves along with the Doolittle Community Center
and Andre Agassi College Preparatory Academy. The library features a 300-seat
theater, gallery, and conference room for public use. The copper-colored
metal roof is the most striking architectural element of the building. The
entrance features a sharply pitched canopy and roof that resembles the roof
of a mountain chalet instead of a library in the desert. Aqua trim and pink
concrete block, textured and regular, are the other major building materials.

Obituary: Vegas architect Cambeiro dies.
Las Vegas Review - Journal. Las Vegas, Nev.: Dec 10, 1990. pg. 1.b
Arturo Cambeiro a longtime Las Vegas
architect died Saturday at a local hospital. He was 58.
Cambeiro was born April 19, 1932, in Havana. At 29, he immigrated to
the United States without money or possessions and unable to speak
English.
He came to Las Vegas in the 1960s and eventually started the Arturo
Cambeiro & Associates Ltd. architecture and engineering firm.
His accomplishments include serving as the principal architect for
projects such as the Thomas & Mack Center, numerous elementary
schools, several Clark County fire stations and two terminals at McCarran
International Airport.
Cambeiro was a 14-year member of the Clark County Planning Commission
and was appointed by the governor as a member of the Nevada State Board
of Fire Services.
He was a past president and co-founder of the Latin Chamber of Commerce,
a past president of the Las Vegas Chapter of the American Institute
of Architects, a past chairman of the Nevada State Board of Architecture
and was Small Businessman of the Year for the State of Nevada in 1979.
Clark County Commissioner Manny Cortez said Cambeiro will not only
be missed by his family and close friends, but also the community. "I
think a lot of things in the community will be left undone because
he won't be here to do them. There's going to be a gap," Cortez
said.
"He was enthusiastic about Nevada as a whole and his love for
this country and Nevada showed in his work. Most of the work he did
was associated with government and the people."
Cambeiro received numerous awards from various organizations in Clark
County as well awards from the governor and president.
Cortez said Cambeiro has always donated time to the community.
