Collections Description

As of January 2002, the Architecture Studies Library has a basic collection of more than 9000 volumes in the NA (architecture) classification. Current and retrospective materials are being acquired in a broad range of architectural subjects including history, design, theory, and criticism. In addition, the library has approximately 7000 volumes in other Library of Congress classification areas such as TH, SB, HT, HD, NK, T, and TA that cover areas including landscape architecture, interior design, construction and building, and urban planning. A list of newly acquired titles is available online.

The collection currently supports undergraduate and graduate level study in the architectural studies program. The collection also serves the entire academic community for related study, interdisciplinary work, and cultural enrichment. The collection is available as a resource for practicing architects in the community and for the general public.

Periodicals form an important segment of the collection supporting the Architecture Studies Program. The library holds approximately 85 cataloged architecture titles in the Library of Congress classification "NA." 70 additional cataloged titles are held in areas related to architecture. While basic titles include substantial backfiles (e.g. Architectural Record is held from 1891 onwards), many of the titles are relatively new subscriptions (dating from the early 1990s in many cases).

Periodical indexes available in the Architecture Studies Library include: Avery Index to Architectural Periodicals, Art Index, Architectural Periodicals Index, Burnham Index, Architectural Index, Construction Index, and Design and Applied Arts Index. Online access to the Avery Index and Art Index is available for university patrons.

The Architecture Studies Library has several research collections on microfiche, including the Historic American Buildings Survey, the Historic American Engineering Record, Architecture and Monuments in France, and the Furniture Library Collection. The Early Alinari Photographic Archive of Art and Architecture in Italy is located in the Microforms Section of the Main Library.

The Architecture Studies Library holds more than 200 architecture video tapes in its collection. A slide collection is maintained by the School of Architecture.

The drawings and specifications of Martin Stern, Jr., is now housed in Special Collections in Lied Library (as of Dec. 2001). The collection consists of over 600 tubes of plans and drawings, over 100 notebooks of programs and documents, 35 drawers of various plans and sketches, a collection of project photos, project catalogs, and numerous artists' renderings of resort hotels in Las Vegas, Hawaii, British Columbia, Lake Tahoe, and Atlantic City, as well as other influential architectural projects.

The Architecture Studies Library maintains a file of newspaper clippings and other uncataloged material such as builder and developer brochures. This vertical file includes material on many topics including individual hotels; developments such as Summerlin, Lake Las Vegas, and McDonald - Sun City; associations; building types; and product information. For an extensive subject list go to the ASLVertical file table of contents.

For additional collections information, go to the Collections Table Of Contents.
