Crete, Michel Personal link
A perfectionist by even the most exacting standards, artist Michel Crête believes the greatest threat to creativity is satisfaction. Michel Crête began his studies at Quebec's Conservatory of Dramatic Art when he was 27, and in 1985, began his career at Montreal's Théatre de 4 sous. With his talent for set design, décor and costumes, Crête joined Cirque du Soleil where he designed the costumes for Le Cirque Réinventé (1987). Endlessly creative and non-conformist, he moved on to prove that his true genius was in set design and he guided Cirque du Soleil's journey throughout the 1990s as a magnificent theatre set replaced the traditional circus ring. Crête soon found an accomplice in Franco Dragone and together they collaborated on Cirque du Soleil's evolution from Big Top to the over-the-top theatres for "O", Mystère and La Nouba.

From 1990 to 1998, the environments for all of Cirque du Soleil's productions sprang from Michel Crête's imagination: he was the one responsible for the scenography of Nouvelle Expérience, Fascination, Saltimbanco, Mystère, Alegría, Quidam, "O", and La Nouba. He also had a hand in designing the three theatres that house Cirque du Soleil shows in Las Vegas and Orlando. In 1998, Michel Crête received the Entertainment Design "Production of the Year" award for "O".

Michel Crête came to Cirque du Soleil in 1986 as costume designer for the show We Reinvent the Circus. His creations for that show, which was also recorded for television, won him a Gémeaux and a Gemini (awards recognizing the work of television artisans in Canada) for best costumes for a variety show.

After graduating from the Scenography Program at the National Theatre School of Canada in 1984, Michel Crête quickly became one of the most sought-after theatre set designers in Montreal. Between 1985 and 1991, he designed costumes and sets for nearly forty plays, working with renowned directors and rising stars on the Quebec theatre scene. Three times in a row, from 1989 to 1991, Montreal's Théâtre du Nouveau Monde awarded him its Prix Gascon-Roux for best set design.

In 2001, he designed the big top and created the set for Cheval, a production of the Cheval-Théâtre company founded by Gilles Ste-Croix

Ferris, George A.
Birth date January 31, 1859.
Reno Architect

So who was George Ashmead Ferris, who sometimes gets credit for the Ferris wheel? That George was born in Philadelphia Jan. 31, 1859, two weeks before George W. G. Ferris. He was educated in Quaker schools and at Swarthmore College, later coming to Colorado and northern California. In 1906, he opened an office in Reno as an architect. George A. Ferris designed most of the schools in Reno after his arrival as well as high schools in Las Vegas, Eureka and Austin. His design for the Governor's Mansion was accepted by acting Gov. Denver Dickerson in 1908. In the mid-1920s, Ferris and prominent architect Frederic J. DeLongchamps jointly supervised the plans for the state building in downtown Reno, where the Pioneer Center stands today.
George A. Ferris died at Saint Mary's Hospital in Reno on Aug. 12, 1948, leaving a son, Lehman A. "Monk" Ferris, to carry on the architectural firm. Lehman died in 1997 at the age of 103.

Harris, Jo
Birth date 1927.
Passed away June 04, 2005.
Caesars Palaces: Las Vegas, NV
3570 Las Vegas Blvd. S.
Melvin Grossman (Architect) and
Jo Harris (Interior Designer)

She was responsible for laying out original inside of Caesars Palace, Circus Circus

Jo Harris, 78, the original interior designer for Caesars Palace and Circus Circus, died Saturday in Sacramento, Calif., from complications of diabetes. She served as a top aide to developer Jay Sarno for 28 years.

"He had the upmost respect for her work," said Heidi Sarno Straus, a daughter of the late Jay Sarno. "She had a style all her own, and it really appealed to my father."

She described the style as "high drama ... very Vegas glamour ... everything sunken marble, velvet on velvet and very ornate."

Stan Mallin, Sarno's longtime partner, described Harris as a pleasant associate. "She was very clever in designing and naming restaurants," including Cleopatra's Barge, the Bacchanal Room and Noshorium coffee shop at Caesars.

She consulted with them on casino exteriors, but "mainly her forte was interiors," Mallin said.

Harris was born in Sharon, Pa. Her father developed the first fully cantilevered, low-wing monoplane in Cleveland, and she had her own airplane, motorcycle and car when she was in high school.

She started working as an unpaid assistant to a local architect there at 14. She learned interior design at a department store in Youngstown, Ohio, and later did commercial design in Tulsa, Okla., Miami and Atlanta, where Sarno hired her in 1956.

Sarno and Mallin gave her 24 hours to design a combination nightclub, restaurant, convention center and motor inn for Birmingham, Ala. They also built the so-called cabanas in Atlanta, Dallas, and Palo Alto, Calif.

The Palo Alto project resembled Sarno's first casino, Caesars Palace, which opened in 1966. She designed it in a classical European design. A line of Italian cypress trees, fountains and reflecting pools led to the building.

Before Caesars, the design of most Strip casinos "was all just accidental," she recalled in an interview eight years ago.

The development team took a different approach with Circus Circus. It was built around an arena where circus performers still do stunts. Carnival attractions were on the second floor, along with "the world's best pickup joint." It had numbered tables with phones that could be used to call guests at other tables.

Attractions included a live raccoon that played basketball in a vending machine and a sideshow where a woman changed into a gorilla. The gorilla then broke out of her cage and sent people running.

Circus Circus was the first Strip casino designed for the family market, Mallin said, but it was "ahead of its time. It was not well-received." In the years after Circus Circus opened in 1968, there were fuel shortages, he said. "We went through some tough times" before Circus Circus and the concept won acceptance under Bill Bennett's management, he said.

After those projects, Harris became chairwoman of the new architectural and design department at Bauder College in California.

She helped Sarno plan his last project, The Grandissimo. It would have been the biggest hotel ever built, with 1 million square feet of public area and 6,000 guest rooms. It was to have waterfalls, a boat ride for guests, an illuminated aquarium with mermaids and an indoor swimming pool.

But the Grandissimo was never built, and Sarno died in 1984.

Survivors include three sons, Mickey Mahan of Houston, Bo Harris of Florida, Jack Benner, also a designer, of Berlin; and a daughter, Jill Von of Phoenix.

Memorial services are pending at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at 11101 51st St. in Sacramento. Arrangements are by Evergreen Memorial.

from an Oral Interview with Mr. Wing Fong:
What did you think of Mr. McDaniel and the design of the UNLV campus and the performing arts?
At that time, Mr. McDaniel won many architecture awards, not only here, but in other places, in Las Vegas. He was very famous for revolutionizing the architecture industry, making it more modern and streamlined, and he won many awards. And he was really a devoted architect. For example, Art Ham Hall and the Judy Bailey Theater, it was his idea to divide [the theaters] into two parts because the acoustics [for] music and drama are completely different. So he and I went to look at different areas, what made them successful and why the other projects failed. We went to Lincoln Hall and also the (Dottie Shindler) Theater. We learned about the acoustics. It's so important. And the second phase, to decide how big we should build the building. At that time we knew, including Dr. Moyer, we knew the town would grow. The campus is going to grow to 25,000 in student enrollment. Dottie Shindler (???) Theater and Lincoln are (aren't?) much bigger than this one. At that time we knew we would always have competition on the Strip, you know, all kinds of entertainment. So we originally decided it's going to have a capacity of 5000. We figured people [would] feel much more easier [being able] to see the stage, so we decided [on a] limit [of] 3,000 seating capacity instead of 5,000. I said okay, if we [go] beyond 3,000, we'd like maybe two performances instead of one. Or three, if necessary. So we decided on 3,000 seats, which is working out real well. I don't think we [have] ever had overcapacity, or had to have a second performance.

Then the Judy Bailey Theater, we felt that every seat [should be] orchestra seat. You notice, again we designed it with about a capacity of 600. When we have, like [the] Nutcracker Suite, it takes [up] much space. Then they have 2 or 3 or 5 performances. Everybody enjoys both theaters, not only [from] the acoustic standpoint, but they feel like the place is almost full most of the time, so it gives them a good impression. The performance must be very good [since] the theater is almost filled up.

*Jack Miller received a 1999 AIA Nevada Special Recognition Award.

Prominent architect Jack H. Miller, who designed some of the most well-known buildings in the Las Vegas Valley, died Monday at the age of 84.
Miller, of Henderson, died at St. Rose Dominican Hospital. A cause of death was not immediately released.
Miller was a highly recognized architect who took pride in the role he played in Las Vegas history, helping to construct such buildings as the Clark County Detention Center and the life science building at the University of Nevada, Las Vegas.
"I took advantage of the opportunity to be here," Miller said of his career during a 1993 interview with the Review-Journal. "I certainly have enjoyed every minute of my time in Las Vegas."
He was born in Denver on Oct. 25, 1914, and obtained a degree in architecture from Louisiana State University. Miller was offered a job with B.F. Goodrich in Ohio after graduating but instead chose to take a chance and come to Las Vegas to start his career.
For the next 50 years the proprietor of Jack Miller and Associates helped build the detention center, the old Basic High School in Henderson, several additions at the Las Vegas Convention Center, housing at Nellis Air Force Base and the life science building and three other structures at UNLV. The downtown Centel and Nevada Power Co. buildings were also Miller's projects.
However, the trials of being an architect in Las Vegas -- a community that is constantly reinventing itself -- were not lost on Miller, who lamented on the city's constant changes in 1993.
"It's nothing different than what other cities have experienced," Miller said. "It's lovely, the nostalgia, but the things we had are fast disappearing."
Miller's wife of 55 years, Annabel, died in 1993. Miller is survived by a daughter, Mary Anne Ginos of Lakeside, Conn.; and two sons, Jim of New York City and John of Cologne, Germany.
Services will be held at 3 p.m. Monday at Palm Mortuary in Henderson. The family requests donations be made to the School of Architecture Scholarship Fund at UNLV.

Nespor, Maurice J
Before he was an artist, Nespor was an architect, and his background shows in his formal, geometric compositions. Nespor incorporates cardboard, paper and graphite in his collages that feature bold splashes of color against neutral, textured backgrounds and, sometimes, other objects, like a torn fragment of the artist's wicker hat. The effect is clean, elegant and abstract. (2005)

Maurice Nespor began as an architect in Nevada, working for 30 years in the field before turning to fine art full time. He once said, "A career in architecture has given me discipline for the task and insight into the principles of composition." His formal compositions and geometric shapes and lines are reminiscent of fragmented architectural drawings and models. Nespor employs chine colle, cardboard, and occasional found objects, to which he adds rich areas of color and textural elements. On his large-scale works these textures resemble bas-relief, offering dramatic statements that might give the impression of an aerial landscape. (2003)

Rissman, Homer A.
Passed away October 2001.
See also "Rissman & Rissman Associates".

UNLV Libraries Special Collections holds: 18 boxes (1 slim document box, 17 document boxes). Collection no. 2002-20. [ Collection is comprised of the drawings and architectural renderings of noted Las Vegas architect Homer Rissman. Some of Rissman's most notable projects include the Flamingo Towers, Sands Expo Center, Circus Circus (the original), and the additions to the original International (later Las Vegas Hilton). 1957-1996. ]
A partical list of drawings from this collection can be found at: http://www.library.unlv.edu/arch/architects/homerrissman.html

Homer A. Rissman, a longtime Las Vegas architect, made a unique contribution to the Strip skyline when he designed the tent-shaped Circus Circus.

In addition to the Circus Circus, Rissman designed a number of other local properties, such as the Dunes Country Club, the Hacienda on the south end of the Strip and the Bonanza, which had been on the Bally's site.

His work also includes the Flamingo Las Vegas towers and the Primm hotels Buffalo Bill's, Whiskey Pete's and the Primadonna, said Nevada Moore, who had worked for Rissman the past 11 years.

"He was one of the nicest men I ever knew," Moore said.

Rissman died Wednesday. He was 74.

Born Feb. 22, 1927 in Chicago, Rissman, who came to Las Vegas in 1956 to design the Hacienda, started his career by building simple, inexpensive houses in Illinois.

In 1954 he moved to California and initially came to prominence building restaurants and motels along the developing interstate highway system.

It was such work that brought Rissman to Las Vegas, where he would become known for his imaginative building design concepts, including Circus Circus, which he co-developed with gaming pioneer Jay Sarno, and the riverboat-shaped Holiday Casino, now Harrah's.

One of Rissman's early jobs was a major renovation of the Flamingo Hilton, where he painstakingly worked around historic architecture dating back to when mobster Bugsy Siegel built the resort.

In the process, Rissman replaced most of the buildings -- which had been built with cheap materials -- with sturdy and useful structures. Still, he saved Siegel's suite, complete with trap doors for quick escapes, as well as other early VIP suites.

In a later renovation, by another architect, those efforts were destroyed as the resort underwent major changes as operators attempted to distance themselves from the property's organized crime roots.

Away from the Strip, Rissman designed luxury apartment complexes, including the Regency Tower, where he lived for many years.

In his spare time, Rissman and his wife, Alice, who survives him, visited Nevada ghost towns and helped preserve them for their historic significance.

AWARD 15

Harris Sharp received a 1999 AIA Nevada Special Recognition Award.

Harris was hired by a design company called Worswick and worked on commercial and residential buildings. He stayed with Worswick until 1950 when he and friend Walter Zick formed a partnership, Zick and Sharp. It was an alliance that would last until 1987, when both men retired.

About the time the partnership formed, the test site started setting off bombs. Harris drove young Spence and his little sisters to a spot "about 20 miles from ground zero" to witness one event, held just before daybreak. They weren't the only ones there, it was considered a family outing. The family saw the nighttime blasted away with sudden bright light and watched in awe as the mushroom cloud grew. Later tests rocked buildings and jiggled table lamps but people soon became blasé and no one paid much attention.

Through the years, Zick and Sharp designed some of the city's more notable buildings. Besides the downtown casinos, they designed the library at the university, the Foley Federal Building and the Ford Foundation auditorium in Boulder City as well as banks and other commercial buildings.

Harris made a niche for himself with his innovative, modernist junior and senior high schools and won national awards for those designs. He held the honor of being the architect of the nation's first air-conditioned junior high school -- Hyde Park, 900 Hinson St.

As Las Vegas grew, the Zick and Sharp partnership began remodeling existing hotels like the Golden Nugget, El Rancho, Thunderbird and Flamingo. It was at that last hotel-casino where Harris met the infamous Benjamin "Bugsy" Siegel.

"He said Bugsy was 'the kind of guy that if you looked him in the eye and made a promise, you'd better keep it,' " Spence recalled.

Harris not only designed the Plaza, he was co-owner of it for years. Even though he strove for functional floor plans, he also toyed with novel ideas. One of those was putting a swimming pool in the Plaza's second floor, complete with a view of Fremont Street. The pool was later removed. The space is now home to the hotel's Center Stage Restaurant.

During Helldorado's early days, it was customary for the Jaycees and Elks to dress in western wear and carry real six guns loaded with blanks.

Harris, at 6-feet, 2-inches and about 225 pounds, carried two six shooters and was an imposing figure. He and a friend were at Binion's Horseshoe in their western outfits when his friend recognized a crook that had broken into his home.

"So they pulled their Colts out and held this miscreant until the police arrived," Spence recalled.

As city commissioner in the 1950s, Harris held a vision of Las Vegas' future expansion and tried to guide it by that vision. He argued, for example, that Highway 95 have multiple lanes in both directions.

Young, Jack R
Birth date 1936.
Passed away September 1997.
Jack "Rennie" Young, 60, the outdoor lighting contractor for some of the major casinos on the Strip and in Atlantic City, N.J., died earlier this week in a hospital in Ensenada, Mexico.
Young designed outdoor lighting for the MGM Grand, Excalibur, Caesars Palace, Stardust, Las Vegas Hilton, Flamingo Hilton, Donald Trump's Atlantic City casinos and, most recently, the Sahara.
He founded John Renton Young Lighting and Sign Co. in 1965 and sold it to Mikohn Gaming Inc. in 1994. Before his recent retirement, he was president of the subsidiary, renamed Mikohn Lighting and Sign.
"Jack was the master at never giving up," said Mark Johnson, Mikohn Lighting's general manager. Casino executives "were his friends, and he wanted it to be right."
Young worked unsuccessfully for five years to find a way to make the black-glass of the Luxor pyramid visible at night.
The International Engineering Illumination Society recognized him with the Paul Waterbury Award of Excellence in 1992 for the Stardust and in 1994 for the Excalibur.
He won an award for capturing the magic of Excalibur's facade with lighting, Johnson said.
Young was born in Ogden, Utah, in 1936 and lived in Las Vegas for 50 years. He graduated from Las Vegas High School.
His father, Jack, was a co-founder of Young Electric Sign Co., a custom sign company in Las Vegas.
