Mountain's Edge Recreation Center
The recreation center will be the first realized design in the new Mountain’s Edge Regional Park. Therefore, the building will serve as the welcoming gateway as it establishes the design tone for future park developments. Special measurements are taken to ensure the design complements and responds to the existing context. Architectural elements and material/color palette are derived and interpreted from the existing neighborhood character. The building will be amongst the first in Las Vegas to receive a sustainable Green Globes certification. In response to creating an environmentally responsive and energy conscience design, the building is sited to take full advantage of the site’s intrinsic daylight views.
Mountain views become the focus and inspiration for the design. The Lobby becomes the buildings feature element as it creates a community gathering spot. Soaring roof lines and glass expanses allow for controlled natural daylight to permeate the space while directing the user’s eyes towards the surrounding mountain views. Careful consideration is given to the flow of the building to the land and the landscape. The user is aware of their environment at all times. Careful planning with the client, end user, and the community was necessary to ensure the inclusion of the pragmatic requirements and activities desired for the facility. The result is a clear internal organization to promote security and safety for the facility and its users. The Mountains Edge Recreation Center will be a destination for the growing neighborhood not only for fitness, but for education, community, and culture.
