Rawson-Neal Psychiatric Hospital
Completed August 16, 2006.
Southern Nevada is under served by psychiatric hospitals - the only one being provided by the state. Prior to admission, patients are examined for physical problems at a local hospital and held there until a bed in the psychiatric facility opens up. Prior to the completion of this project, up to one-third of all emergency beds in southern Nevada were occupied by psychiatric patients, creating s shortage of beds for those with serious physical ailments requiring immediate medical care. To satisfy the need for psychiatric beds, the State of Nevada chose to copy the “pod” design used in the existing psychiatric hospital in northern Nevada. Through a series of workshops with stakeholders and neighbors, the hospital began to take shape. The goal was to create a healing atmosphere that did not fit within the institutional norms of a typical psychiatric hospital.
