Architecture By Five was a group established in the late 1960s/early 1970s to complete a number of public sector projects in the state of Nevada. The group, comprised of Jack Miller, AIA; Robert Fielden, FAIA; Walter Zick, AIA; Harris Sharp, AIA; and Thomas Turner, P.E., would collaborate on projects that were too large (deemed so by either the county or by themselves) for their individual firms to handle. Architecture By Five completed projects such as the Clark County Juvenile Courts, the Southern Nevada Correction Center in Jean, Nevada, and the Las Vegas Sports Stadium. Jack Miller and Robert Fielden (both of Jack Miller & Associates) and Harris Sharp and Walter Zick (both of Zick & Sharp Architects) would comprise the design team. Jack Miller & Associates would concentrate on the design aspect of the job and Zick & Sharp would focus on the construction documents and administration. If either firm felt that they could handle a job on their own, they remained separate entities.

see also Welton Becket & AssociatesFrom a dance hall in St. Paul, Minn., to a signature multiuse high-rise for a Saudi Arabian prince, the firm that Franklin Ellerbe founded in 1909 has traveled well. The 1988 acquisition of Welton Becket enhanced the firm's legacy through its own landmark designs, such as Capitol Records in Los Angeles and the Nile Hilton in Cairo, Egypt.

WELTON BECKET AND ASSOCIATES

After graduating in architecture from the University of Washington in 1927, Welton Becket studied at the École des Beaux Arts, Fontainbleu, for a year, and then worked several years as a junior designer for firms in Los Angeles and his native Seattle. Becket settled in Los Angeles permanently in 1933, forming a partnership with established Los Angeles architect Charles F. Plummer and Washington classmate Walter Wurdeman. The trio gained considerable local publicity with their award winning design for the Pan Pacific Auditorium in 1935, which facilitated their entry into Hollywood film circles. The following years saw a series of residential commissions for movie stars such as James Cagney, Caesar Romero, and Robert Montgomery. These were generally executed in traditional Period Revival styles.

Incorporated as Wurdeman and Becket in 1939 after Plummer's death, the firm prospered and expanded during the World War II era, completing public housing and defense projects and positioning themselves well for the region's post-war construction boom. Now focused on larger commercial projects, Wurdeman and Becket's work of the mid- to late 1940s took on aspects of the Late Moderne and International styles. Their best known commissions included Bullock's Department Store in Pasadena (1944) and buildings for General Petroleum (1946) and Prudential Insurance (1947) in Los Angeles. Following Wurdeman's untimely death in 1949, Becket took over sole leadership of the firm as Welton Becket and Associates. It grew to be one of the largest architectural firms in the United States, with headquarters in Los Angeles and offices in San Francisco, New York, Houston, and Chicago. Welton Becket and Associates completed numerous well known and high-profile projects around Los Angeles, including such icons of mid-twentieth century Modernism as the Capitol Records Building (1954-56) and the Cinerama Dome, the world's first concrete geodesic dome (1963-1964). They were also responsible for the Beverly Hilton Hotel (1955), Memorial Sports Arena (1959), Los Angeles International Airport Theme Building (1962, with Pereira & Luckman and Paul R. Williams), and the Federal Office Building in Los Angeles (1966, with Paul R. Williams and A.C. Martin & Associates).

Welton Becket was named master planner for UCLA in 1948 and continued as supervising architect for the campus until 1968. At UCLA, Welton Becket worked closely with Ralph D. Cornell (later Cornell, Bridgers and Troller), supervising landscape architect for the campus, and the companies collaborated on a number of independent projects, such as the Pomona Civic Center and the Ford Motor Co. in Dearborn.

While working with Walter Wurdeman in the 1930s, Becket embraced the philosophy of "total design," which guided his firm's approach thereafter. He encouraged clients to allow the firm to control all aspects of a design, including master/site planning, engineering, all interior work, finishes, fixtures, and landscaping, so that a unified and coherent building would be achieved. As evidenced by the lengthy treatment of the complex in William Hunt's 1972 biography of the firm, Total Design, the Los Angeles Music Center may well reflect the most complete realization of Becket's philosophy. Welton Becket staff either designed, or had custom designed, all of the interior furnishings and fixtures, carpeting, signage, lighting fixtures, restaurant china and flatware, and even the menus and promotional brochures, announcements, and programs for the facility.

Leadership of the firm was assumed by MacDonald Becket, Welton's son, after his death in 1969. In 1987, Ellerbe Associates acquired Welton Becket Inc. to become Ellerbe Becket Inc. The firm continues today as Ellerbe-Becket.

So who was George Ashmead Ferris, who sometimes gets credit for the Ferris wheel? That George was born in Philadelphia Jan. 31, 1859, two weeks before George W. G. Ferris. He was educated in Quaker schools and at Swarthmore College, later coming to Colorado and northern California. In 1906, he opened an office in Reno as an architect. George A. Ferris designed most of the schools in Reno after his arrival as well as high schools in Las Vegas, Eureka and Austin. His design for the Governor's Mansion was accepted by acting Gov. Denver Dickerson in 1908. In the mid-1920s, Ferris and prominent architect Frederic J. DeLongchamps jointly supervised the plans for the state building in downtown Reno, where the Pioneer Center stands today.
George A. Ferris died at Saint Mary's Hospital in Reno on Aug. 12, 1948, leaving a son, Lehman A. "Monk" Ferris, to carry on the architectural firm. Lehman died in 1997 at the age of 103.

Gillies Stransky Brems Smith PC began in 1978 as Brotherton/Gillies Architects with a staff of two. In 25 years, we have grown to seventy-four people with offices in Salt Lake City, Utah and Ft. Worth, Texas.

1978 to 1980

Abe Gillies says Brotherton/Gillies Architects' initial guiding philosophy was "staying alive" (thankfully he doesn't dance). Abe credits the firm's staying power to its great partners, the contractors who build the projects, and he has dedicated himself to providing them with the best possible documents to do their job. Projects included design/build industrial and retail work in the public sector - primarily for the State of Utah.

Mike Stransky joined the firm in 1979, to manage the Wheeler Machinery Maintenance Facility, the first of several large maintenance facilities projects. In 1980, Mike was made a partner in Brotherton/Gillies/Stransky. Mike, a thorough, meticulous, and outgoing architect was tasked with marketing, and he helped land the first federal job: ECM Pod Shop. Since then, Mike has led all of the federal work, including design services for the US Army Corps of Engineers, the US Postal Service, and the BLM.

In 1982, B/G/S opened a branch office in Denver, Colorado.

1981 to 1986

In 1983, just as Mike and Abe were building their practice, designer David Brems struck out on his own. David was the project manager and project designer on several major condominium and hotel projects for another firm. This experience, and his work on the Brianhead Day Lodge at Southern Utah resort, led to resort and condominium work throughout the West.

In 1984, the practice split: Abe and Mike kept the Salt Lake office and Bob took the Denver practice.

In 1986, Gillies/Stransky Architects, sensing a need for an expanded practice, merged with David Brems + Associates.

1986 to 1989

In June 1986, the partners hired Stephen Smith to manage the Utah Judicial Master Plan project. Subsequently, Stephen became a certified planner, led the firm's planning efforts, and was offered a partnership in 1989.

In 1986, Tom Batenhorst formed GSB/Batenhorst, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Bruce Jorgensen joined GSBS in 1988 as our first landscape architect, bringing that discipline in-house.

1990 to the Present

By the early 1990s GSBS had become a significant force in the Utah architectural community. We had a deepening portfolio of corrections work, particularly in the field of public safety facilities for Utah counties. David's research during the design of the Steiner Aquatic Center encouraged the concept of the community water park for public clients, and we produced a series of swimming pools for Utah communities. As the decade unfolded, landscape architecture and interior design gained increasing importance in our service package. Bruce and his team of landscape architects provide an important dimension in the planning and site design of projects. Hand-in-hand with architects and landscape architects, interior designers provide space planning and design work for many GSBS full-service clients, as well as interior-only clients such as eBay.com. Today, we use our multi-disciplinary capabilities from the beginning of each design project, employing an integrated design approach that considers the impact of each decision on the facility and encourages the creative solution of each aspect of the design.

In 1998, we helped create Mountain Health Design, a joint venture between GSBS and WHR, a Houston firm that specializes in health care, to market health care design services in the Intermountain Region.

Also in 1998, GSBS began to expand its ownership base adding 7 associates. In 2002, Kevin Miller and Scott Henriksen became partners and joined the Board of Directors.

Always committed to contributing to its profession and its community, GSBS principals and staff have played many roles in the local, regional, and national American Institute of Architects. Additionally, we participate in scores of non-profit organizations, charities, and government committees. Within the past three years, we have purchased, renovated, and moved into two buildings in transitional neighborhoods.

Stephen, the GSBS history buff, points out that Thomas Jefferson was a good architect because he was a good citizen. We need to understand our community's characteristics: its strengths and weaknesses, its history, and its goals, before we can design buildings and landscapes that work within their contexts. At GSBS, we believe that we need to be good citizens to become good architects.

So much of what we need to know about being good architects cannot be taught in school, but must be learned through living the profession. This "accidental learning" often takes place slowly - we listen to senior architects, walk the site with contractors, communicate with owners, coordinate design intent with engineering demands, struggle with project contracts and costs, deal with new technologies, and suffer through proposals and presentations. How can we speed up this learning process and increase the depth of talent within our firm? What if we all became teachers?

At GSBS, we created Wabi University, our in-house mentoring and education program. Wabi, very loosely, means "perfection through acts of spontaneous imperfection," and embodies the concepts that our individual contribution is based on our unique talents, that our talents are ever in process, and that our combined talents will offer the best design solutions. At Wabi U., all are encouraged to contribute to our collective talent by teaching and learning from each other.

The firm has been extensively schooled in programming and research allowing us to tackle any unique building type with confidence and the knowledge that the project will be technically correct within the most economical design.



The Design philosophy at J.P. Copoulos, Architect has always been to study solutions from multiple scenarios and let the client, together with the design team, decide on the most appropriate solution taking into account environment, aesthetics, costs, and maintenance. This assures successful projects that maintain their time line toward completion.



To achieve the goal of remaining a small firm we have kept abreast of the latest technological advances in our industry so that we can do more with less staff. To this end we have established in house 3d computer modeling capability using the Building Information Modeling system available with Autocad Revit. Photo realistic rendering capability is available in house.



Project management within our firm is the positive link that connects the talents of the various consulting disciplines to a building project.
