1997 AIA Nevada Design Awards

The AIA Nevada Service Awards are presented yearly to the individuals and organizations whose efforts and contributions benefit the community and further the profession. The Young Architect Citation which is presented to the new architect who at an early stage in their career show exceptional leadership in design, education, and service to the profession, was presented to William Rick Sellers, AIA. Kevin Jeffers, AIA and Bradley D. Schultz, AIA were the recipients of the Service Award, presented for outstanding service to the community. The Firm of the Year Award went to Cathexes, Inc. and the Silver Medal was presented to Maurice Nespor, AIA for dedication to the profession and service to the community.

Over $8,400.00 was raised for scholarships for UNLV architecture students through the silent auction. Donations were received from Henry-Smith Miller, Laurie Hawkinson, Antoine Predock, Curt Fentress, Ceasar Pelli, Ted Flato, Andre Aggasi, Brooke Shields, Eric Owen Moss, Merril Elam, Thom Mayne, and Steven Holl. The AIA Las Vegas has established an endowment fund for architecture students and awards two $500 scholarships each spring and fall.

As a part of Architecture Week celebration, a performance of Architects and Artists II was installed in the new Architecture School. With all the articles regarding Las Vegas appearing throughout the country, the exhibition allowed an opportunity to add an architecture perspective on the growing Las Vegas myth. The theme was the "New Las Vegas Gateway."

Winner of the 1997 Architectural Design Awards were chosen from ninety-three design projects that were entered in the Built, Unbuilt and Detail categories. Entries were judged by Jim Russel, Senior Editor for Architectural Record; Ronco Ruzic, of AR7 Hoover, Desmond Architects in Denver Colorado; Peter Thaler, from Maddingly/Thaler Architecture in San Francisco; and Merril Elam of Scogin, Elam & Bray Architects in Atlanta, Georgia.
