1996 AIA Nevada Design AwardsThe Las Vegas Chapter of the American Institute of Architects hosted their 1996 Architectural Design Awards on Tuesday, September 17th at Treasure Island Hotel and Casino. Two hundred and sixty members of the architectural community attended the black-tie event, which included the presentation of the AIA Nevada Service Awards as well as a "silent Auction" designed to benefit the AIA Scholarship Fund for UNLV Architectural students.The AIA Nevada Service Awards are presented yearly to the individuals and organizations whose efforts and contributions benefit the community and further the profession. The 1996 Patron Award went to the Nevada State Council on the Arts for their support and promotion of architecture and design programs. The Young Architect Citation, which is presented to the new architect who at an early stage in their career show exceptional leadership in design, education, and service to the profession, was presented to Eric Strain, AIA of Tate and Snyder Architects. Craig Galati, AIA of Lucchesi Galati Architects was the recipient of the Service Award, presented for outstanding service to the community. The Firm of the Year Award went to Tate & Snyder Architects, and the Silver Medal was presented to William E. Snyder, President of Tate & Snyder, for his dedication to the profession and his service to the community. Over $2,300 was raised for scholarships for UNLV architecture students through the silent auction. Original sketches, designs, photographs and books form some of the most prestigious architects in the country, including Michael Graves, FAIA, Frank O. Gehry, Rebecca Binder, FAIA, Robert Venturi and others were offered for bid. AIA Las Vegas has established an endowment fund for architecture students and awards two $500 scholarships each spring and fall. Winner of the 1996 Architectural Design Awards were chosen form sixty-seven design projects which were entered in the Built, Unbuilt and Entertainment categories. Entries were judged by Frances Anderton, writer and architecture critic; award winning architect Curt Fentress; and Ted Flato, Lake/Flato Architects, Inc., San Antonio, Texas. A list is provided for all of the entries for the Nevada Design Awards Contest of 1996. Winners are indicated.
