NEVADA AIA DESIGN AWARDS 2008

Entry number: ie08017
Project Name: unicaHOME furniture showroom
Building Type: Commercial
Completion Date: June 10, 2008
Architect: assemblageSTUDIO
Building Location: 3901 West Russell Road, Las Vegas, NV 89118

Design Team:
Electrical Engineer: TJK Consulting Engineers, Inc.
General Contractor: Kalb Industries of Nevada
Structural Engineer: Mendenhall Smith Structural Engineers
Photographer: Henri Sagalow Photography
Mechanical Engineer: Petty Engineering Las Vegas, LLC

Narrative:
Putting aside any preconceived design exuberance, the design of unicaHOME's new showroom places the importance of the furniture, many of which could be "objects of art" within themselves

Instead, the furniture is placed upon simple platforms to elevate their visibility within the showroom much like objects within the museum. Walls are used as backdrops with design graphics. These graphics are placed within the showroom as paintings in one's home. Poly-carbonate panels surround the lighting studio to enable the glow to fill the space.

The design is straight forward, with an emphasis on clean modern lines embellished with great modern future...simple and to the point.

Sustainability:
Day lighting strategies included:

  • Incorporating existing skylights
  • No obstruction with existing north glazing
  • Clearstory bounces light back to non window clearstory

Materials:

  • Locally manufactured
  • Recycled content
  • Low voc paints
  • Existing concrete was used, non toxic sealer applied

Construction:

  • Platforms were built by using all modular components to reduce waste
  • The open floor plan allowed for easy transition to future programs/modifications
