Design Approach/Narrative: Located adjacent to a community in northern Henderson, the police station is strategically placed to impart a positive influence on a neighborhood that has a high volume of response calls. The challenge was to create a connection to deteriorating neighborhood while maintaining a discreet and efficient environment for the station personnel that work within. Henderson’s vision is to link law enforcement and community with a sense of stability inherent in the box is utilized. Pulling the sections apart demonstrates a transparency of community service. Large protective overhangs, created by shifting planes of the separated box, allow for solar control and signify public spaces. High clerestories allow the infiltration of natural light while protecting views of sensitive and secure functions. Glazed panels enhance the intuitive access to public services. By projecting an image of stability and visual presence through the use of form and transparency, the new Henderson Community Police Station will elicit a sense of safety, pride, and community.
