Design Approach/Narrative: The campus is located atop a foothill landscape in north Reno. The building expansion site between the existing Red Mountain Building (which houses admissions, student services, classrooms, and administration) and the existing Plant Facilities Building. From a second level, the site offers views of the foothills to the North and of the Sierras to the South. The campus was a collection of four buildings with no landscape connective elements. The area between buildings (a parking area we transformed into a quad) has framed views of the city and Sierra Mountain range. Sidewalks randomly traced the edges of each building and an overgrowth of evergreen trees existed along the edge of where the Student Center would be located.

Daylight infuses the interior spaces, reducing electrical demand inside the building and connecting the space to the outdoors. The light open atmosphere lends itself to evoke a welcome and safe environment. The building acts as a lantern to the campus marking it with a sense of prominence, campus forum and student pride.
