Dean's Welcome

I am delighted to welcome you to UNLV and to the University Libraries. Located at the center of campus, Lied Library and our satellite libraries are committed to providing our students and faculty with the information and the research skills essential for academic success. Our library collections and our outstanding staff also serve as the center of lifelong learning for the diverse and dynamic southern Nevada community.

The University Libraries support UNLV’s mission as a public research university committed to rigorous educational programs and the highest standards of a university education. We educate individuals across the generations, including our leaders of tomorrow, students who do not know a world without immediate internet access and hand held computers. Our librarians and staff, themselves raised “on the web,” are dedicated to help you become intelligent consumers in a complex and mystifying digital world divided into two spheres – a public web dominated by common search engines that retrieve “free” content, and a private, commercial web that contains the vast intellectual output of scholars and researchers worldwide. The private, or hidden, web is largely unavailable through free search engines. The UNLV Libraries, through licensing agreements, provides our users with access to this essential information. In addition to hosting great technological resources and expertise, the University Libraries lead UNLV’s efforts to ensure that our students and other library users are proficient practitioners of information literacy – the ability to find, evaluate and use information efficiently and effectively to create new knowledge.

The UNLV Libraries acquires commercialized digital content, organizes it, and makes it available for its users: faculty, staff, students, and members of the community. We have experts to teach students, researchers and the larger Southern Nevada community in the critical skills needed for lifelong learning in our fast-paced, global, knowledge economy and we have spaces and services, online and in person, that combine high tech with high touch. Our real and virtual spaces are designed to build community and nurture inquiry, while providing access to high quality information and a staff of experts to facilitate academic success, innovative research, and independent learning for all our visitors.

Through our website the Libraries provide portals for each of our constituents: undergraduates and graduate students; faculty and visiting scholars; and alumni and members of the Southern Nevada community.

Lied Library and our three branches (Architecture, Curriculum Materials, and Music) include more than 110 staff members, with 40 library faculty. We are a gateway to almost 20,000 electronic journals containing millions of articles that are accessible ONLY from the Libraries home page. We also have more than 1.7 million books, including more than 500,000 e-books. The University Libraries is home to two renowned research centers: the Center for Gaming Research and the Oral History Research Center. In addition, our Special Collections Division actively documents and preserves the history and history in the making of Southern Nevada.

So whether you are on the Maryland campus, at our Shadow Lane location, at the UNLV Hotel College in Singapore, or contacting us from anywhere our 3 million annual “electronic users” might reside, I hope you explore all our collections and services. Our library users are as diverse as the southern Nevada community. Enter our physical libraries and you will encounter UNLV students who need help with a course assignment or thesis topic; a UNLV faulty member exploring an important research project; or perhaps a teacher, architect, health professional or local business professional seeking the latest information in his or her field.

Whatever your information needs, we invite you to visit, call, e-mail, text message, or “chat” with us, and connect with an expert at the UNLV Libraries!
